Nandigram: Chamber's plea

Special Correspondent

Says protests will send wrong signals to investors

NEW DELHI: In the wake of the Wednesday's killing of 15 people in police firing at Nandigram in West Bengal, Assocham president Venugopal Dhoot on Thursday appealed to all political parties to sit together and resolve the issue of land acquisition for Special Economic Zones.

In a statement, he said: "Instead of politicising the issue, the parties should find an amicable solution to the whole issue of land acquisition for Special Economic Zones and industrialisation."

Urging the Centre to expeditiously finalise the rehabilitation policy for farmers, whose land had been acquired for industrialisation, he said: " Due care should be taken so that the cultivable land, to the extent possible, is not taken."
