Congress, CPI condemn Chhattisgarh killings

NEW DELHI: The Congress and the Communist Party of India on Thursday condemned the brutal killing of police personnel by naxalites in Chhattisgarh and urged the State Government to address the issue.

The Congress said party president Sonia Gandhi expressed her deepest condolences and conveyed sympathies to the families of the deceased.

Party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said while acts of violence had no place in a democracy, the State Government should introspect why was 57 per cent of the deaths and 47 per cent of the incidents of naxalite attacks took place in the State.

He said these figures reflect the enormity of the problem and suggested that local intelligence be toned up.

"Shun violence"

In a separate statement, the CPI appealed to the naxalites to give up violence.

It also urged the State and the Central Governments to address the socio-economic distress of the tribals, which could safeguard their livelihood and rights.

The party reiterated its demand of cessation of all activities, including Salwa Judum, in the name of encounter with naxalites.
