Staff Reporter

Labourers seek weekly payment of wages

LENDING AN EAR: District Collector D. Kadmiel interacting with labourers engaged in tank desiltation work taken up under Indiramma Cheruvu Scheme at Ravulacheruvu village in Anantapur on Wednesday.

ANANTAPUR: To learn the ground-level problems in the implementation of different Government schemes, district Collector D. Kadmiel made a surprise inspection of works taken up under NREGS, Indiramma tanks restoration, Indiramma housing, Indira Prabha and watershed schemes in Dharmavaram and Chennekothapalli mandals in the district on Wednesday. At Ravulacheruvu village in Dharmavaram rural mandal, the Collector inspected a tank restoration work and interacted with the labourers engaged in the desiltation work. He inspected the facilities like shade and drinking water arranged for the workers. Labourers -- Laxmidevi, Gangadevi, Rudramma and Mallanna -- and others urged the Collector to hike the wages as the soil was hard, requested him to ensure weekly payment of wages and asked for provision of baskets and spades for lifting the soil. The Collector told them that the Government had already hiked the wages by 20 per cent keeping in view the conditions in the district and had also supplied implements.

Schemes

He directed Project Director of DWMA E.N. Srinivasulu to provide baskets and spades to the poorest among the labourers. To a complaint that wages were not paid for the last six months for the completed works under Indira Prabha, the PD said they would be cleared immediately.

The Collector explained to newspersons that 1,441 works were taken up under Indiramma Tanks Scheme with an estimated cost of Rs. 66 crores. At Dharmapuri, he inspected construction of 141 Indiramma houses.
