TIME FOR REVIEW: Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta at a meeting on photo rolls coverage in Madurai on Thursday.
MADURAI: Permanent Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) centres will be established in all Assembly constituencies to update voters list all through the year, Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta said here on Thursday. He told reporters that Village Administrative Officers (VAOs) in rural areas and Bill Collectors in urban areas would be nominated as booth-level officers to take up addition, deletion and verification of applications. The new system would ensure a clean voter list at any given point of time. It had proved successful in other States. He said public hearing for the delimitation exercise would be held at three places in the State. Schedule for the by-election in the Madurai West constituency was yet to be finalised. Police officers who had come in for adverse mention by the Election Commission would not be deployed for poll duty. Photo roll coverage in Madurai West constituency had crossed 96 per cent. Efforts were on to achieve 100 per cent at the earliest, Mr. Naresh Gupta said. Staff Reporter from Tiruchi writes Mr. Gupta, who chaired a review meeting with election officials of Tiruchi, Karur, Perambalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukottai and Nagappattinam districts, said a draft photo electoral roll would be published by mid-April.
