RWAs condemn new MCD move to clear more roads

Staff Reporter

"It is a travesty of justice and a mockery of the election code"

NEW DELHI: Residents' welfare associations in the Capital have strongly condemned the move of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to clear 355 new roads for notification under commercial or mixed-land use terming it "a travesty of justice and a mockery of the election code".

United Residents' Joint Action (URJA), the apex body of RWAs, said the Congress-led MCD was only eyeing a few more votes as the party was most likely to lose the elections. Captain B.V.S. Dron, RWA candidate from Mayur Vihar Phase II, said: "We are shocked at the blatant attempt by the MCD to please vote bank. Without doubt this would be seen as an attempt by the Congress, which dominated the MCD, to shore up their chances in the elections."

Another URJA member, S. P. Gupta from Rajender Nagar, said the residents were already suffering due to encroachment on roads and now the MCD had given the green signal to the same on 355 new roads.

`Eyeing votes'

RWA candidate from New Ranjit Nagar Amrik Singh said instead of improving the conditions of resettlement colonies and putting infrastructure in place in such colonies, the MCD was only trying to pit residents against residents for the sake of a few votes.

People's Action president Sanjay Kaul said the move was a blatant violation of the election code.

"Since the notification has not yet been done, we have not formally approached the Election Commission," said Mr. Kaul.
