CHANDIGARH: Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has urged the Centre to declare a special package for providing relief to the farmers of Haryana whose standing crops have suffered heavy damage due to the recent rains and hailstorm. Talking to media persons in the Press Gallery of the Vidhan Sabha on Thursday, Mr. Hooda said he had visited the affected villages in Rewari, Mahendergarh, Narnaul, Mewat and Faridabad districts. Immediately on returning to Chandigarh he had telephonically apprised Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, who is also the Chairman of the Natural Calamities Relief Fund, about the situation. He said he had ordered special Girdawari (assessment of damage) to estimate the exact loss of the crops. Further, the officials of the Revenue Department had been instructed to submit their report within 10 days so that the farmers could be given compensation by April 15. The State Government had enhanced the compensation amount by two-and-a-half times, he added. This amount was likely to touch Rs.100 crore. Crops standing over an area of more than 2 lakh acres had been damaged due to the rains last month but the maximum damage was caused due to the hailstorm and rains during the last few days as the crops of wheat and mustard were almost ready to be harvested in the fields of southern Haryana.
