Confusion prevails over sealing issue

Staff Reporter

`MCD not willing to resume the drive till polls are over'

NEW DELHI: Almost a week after the Supreme Court directed resumption of sealing of illegal commercial establishments not covered under the new Master Plan for Delhi-2021, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Thursday sent across an official word to the Supreme Court-appointed Monitoring Committee expressing its unwillingness to kick off the sealing drive until the municipal elections were over.

"The Municipal Commissioner has sent us an official communication that the civic body was not willing to resume the sealing drive before the municipal elections were over. In the light of the recent development, a future course of action will be chalked out by tomorrow morning," said a member of the Monitoring Committee. In the wake of directions of the Supreme Court, the Monitoring Committee had directed the MCD to resume the sealing drive on roads notified under the mixed-use category. "Even on roads notified under the mixed use category it is illegal to run commercial activities on floors other than the ground floor. So we had asked the MCD to resume sealing drive against these violations," the member said. The ruling party fears that resumption of the drive just before the polls would harm its electoral prospects.
