NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the Union Government and the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Secretariats to file details of recovery of outstanding telephone and electricity bills from sitting and former Members of Parliament in the past three years. A Division Bench of Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice H. R. Malhotra also directed the three to inform it how much of dues remained to be recovered from the lawmakers and suggest measures to recover it from the former MPs. The Bench passed the orders on a public interest litigation by voluntary organisation Krishak Bharat in 1998 seeking directions to the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), Central Public Works Department (CPWD) and India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) to recover their dues running into crores from hundreds of sitting and former MPs, which they owe to the four public utilities for enjoying their services. The Lok Sabha Secretariat had informed the Court that it had started making deductions from the salaries of 62 sitting MPs to clear their pending bills.
