NEW DELHI: Remembering his "friend and inspiration", senior bureaucrat and author Girish N. Mehra's book "Nearer Heaven Than Earth -- The Life and Times of Boshi Sen and Gertrude Emerson Sen" was released by the eminent man of letters Karan Singh here on Thursday. Also present at the function were former Union Minister K. C. Pant, Rajya Sabha member P. C. Alexander and Justice Leila Seth. Calling the book more than just a biography of the famous couple, Mr. Pant congratulating the author said: "The book is truly a loving tribute to a remarkable couple. The result of the author's work is a moving account of the life of these unique people. The book is a wonderful offering of a disciple to his guru." Mr. Alexander said Mr. Sen was not just one of the country's foremost agriculture scientists who helped ushering in the Green Revolution but he was also a deeply religious man.
Book release
"The book has managed to capture this essence beautifully. The book gives us an insight into the life of a couple that was know to all the big minds in the 20th Century." Paying tribute to the couple and congratulating the author, Dr. Karan Singh said he was surprised that the couple wasn't better known. "They were a remarkable couple and rarely do such uniquely different people come together to form such a compatible relationship." Claiming to have got to know the couple only through the book, Ms. Leila Seth said: "The book gives you a chance to know this wonderful couple in a unique manner. It gives you a deep insight into their life and thoughts. The book will give its reader several answers and thoughts to mull over." Mr. Mehra called it a "command performance of the heart" and said the book was born out of his desire to "share" the couple with the rest of the world. "I could not keep this treasure (his association with the Sen's) to myself. I thought it would be very selfish on my part to not share them with the rest of the world and thus writing the book was the command of my heart," he added.
