No political party in Kerala has yet secured an absolute majority in the State Assembly. With only eight more results to be declared, the Communist Party, which is emerging as the largest single party, has secured only 55 as against 64 required for an overall majority in the 126-member Assembly. The Congress has won only 40 seats, the PSP 9, Muslim League 8 and Independents 6. The Communist Party, however, relies on the support of five Independents and claims that they would be able to assume power if they got four more seats. One of these five Independents, Mr. V.R. Krishna Iyer from Tellicherry, said on March 16 that his stand would be in support of a Communist Government and, if the party formed a Ministry, it would have his "active support."
