Vadakkekara first e-learning constituency in Kerala

All schools to be linked through State-wide area network

NEDUMBASSERY: Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan declared Vadakkekara as the first e-learning constituency in the State on Friday.

An e-learning project was launched in higher secondary and high schools in the constituency. It aims at improving the quality of education through maximum use of modern technology. Computers and compact disc (CD) libraries will be set up in schools as part of the project.

In his inaugural address, Mr. Achuthanandan said the Government would connect all schools in Kerala through a State-wide area network programme. Internet facilities will be provided in these schools. Referring to the Information Technology (IT) policy of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government, the Chief Minister said learning through the use of EduSat would be encouraged. E-learning facilities available in the country would be fully utilised. Mr. Achuthanandan suggested that attempts be made to improve the computer literacy of students and teachers. The Chief Minister pointed out that the previous United Democratic Front Government had insisted on using only the software developed by Microsoft for educational purposes. The Left had then opposed it by highlighting the need for promoting free software in the State. Mr. Achuthanandan said the LDF Government would continue promoting free software in schools across the State. Elaborating on the advantages of IT learning in schools, the Chief Minister said e-learning would help to raise the academic standards of about 57 lakh students in the State to international standards.
