1.67 crore for State Olympic Games

BANGALORE: The Karnataka State budget, announced on Friday allotted Rs 1.67 crore towards the conduct of the State Olympic Games.

Karnataka Olympic Association President K. Givindaraj, told that "with this substantial allotment the Games will now be held either at Shimoga or Dharwad in November/December. Twenty to 25 disciplines will be held in the games which is being revived after the inaugural edition was held in Bangalore in 2004."

"The Games is to be held annually in different district," he added.

National Youth Games

Karnataka will also play host to the often-postponed inaugural National Youth Games sometime in November or December. "The State Government is moving towards formulating the various committees and after the approval of the dates from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), the National Youth Games, is tentatively scheduled to be held in Bangalore (10 disciplines) and Mysore (eight disciplines) sometime in November or December this year" said Mr. Govindaraj.

The KOA President also raised the proposal of converting the car-park (opposite Malya hospital) into a multi utility hostel to accommodate sportspersons in varied disciplines, which would ease the burden on the Associations conducting National and international events.

Football tournament

The UR Academy of Soccer, Mangalore, is organising a fortnight long invitational knock-out football tournament in memory of Olympian Sanjiva K. Uchil at the Nehru Maidan here from March 20 to April 5.

As many as 16 teams from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and neighbouring Kasargod district in Kerala are expected to participate in the maiden edition of this tournament.
