RSS activist hacked to death

Staff Reporter

MALAPPURAM: An Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker from Moolakkal near Tanur was hacked to death in front of his shop at Othukkungal near here on Friday evening. Lakshmanan Karooparambil, 38, was attacked by a four-member gang when he came out of his shop, Niteesh Industries, at 6.30 p.m.

The police said the attackers came on two bikes. They reportedly hacked Lakshmanan with long knives. He suffered wounds in his neck and head, and died on the spot.

Lakshmanan has been running his business at Othukkungal for 20 years. He is survived by wife Lata and children Sulakshana and Sudarsan. A National Development Front activist, Ansar, was hacked by a gang at Pariyapuram near Tanur on Friday last. Mr. Ansar was attacked while going to distribute newspaper. The police had taken into custody a few RSS workers in connection with the attack. The attack at Othukkungal is believed to be in retaliation for the attack on Ansar. Tanur and neighbouring places responded spontaneously to the attack on Lakshmanan. Shops were closed and vehicles kept off the road. The coastal region of Tirur and Tanur had witnessed a spate of attacks on individuals belonging to different communities following the killing of an RSS worker, Thirunilathukandi Ravi, at B.P. Angadi near here on January 20 .
