SSC exam: administration `floors' students

No chairs and benches for over 37 per cent students in School Education Minister's home district of Nellore No benches, chairs for many students in Education Minister's home district

NELLORE: Bizarre as it may sound, but only around 37 per cent of SSC students, who will take the examination from March 21, will be provided with basic furniture such as benches and chairs in School Education Minister N. Rajyalakshmi's home district — Nellore.

This means, rest of the students across the district will have to write the examination sitting on the floor for two-and-a-half hours from 9.30 a.m. to 12 noon from March 21 to April 7. It may be recalled that the Minister had earlier said that no student in the State would write the examination on the ground.

Contrary to her claim, more than 24,305 SSC students will sit on the floor to write the examination. "As of now, the administration could provide infrastructure facilities for 14,281 out of 38,586 students in the district," district Collector M. Ravi Chandra and District Education Officer V. S. Bhargav told The Hindu .

The officials claimed that they were trying to provide adequate facilities for the remaining students in the coming days. "But there are some difficulties, as several available benches and chairs are not fitting in the test centres as there is a mismatch between measurements of furniture and examination hall," the Collector said.

Another senior official in the Education Department claimed that similar was the case with all other districts across the State. "A significant percentage of SSC students in the State will have to take the examination sitting on the floor despite the Minister's claim."
