TAMBARAM: Students must grasp opportunities that come their way, noted economist and Padma Vibhushan awardee Raja Jesudas Chelliah told a gathering at the Madras Christian College in Tambaram on Friday.

At a felicitation organised by the Department of Economics on being bestowed with the honour this year, Dr. Chelliah recalled his days when he had to wait for a brief while after graduation before taking up teaching Economics at Madras Christian College.

"Teaching at the MCC opened up vistas," the noted economist said.

After a five-year stint as teacher of Economics here, he said he was able to get a Fulbright Scholarship and subsequently complete a Ph.D from the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Chelliah urged students to remember that opportunities would not come frequently and whenever they did, students "must grasp them."

He also appealed to students, teachers and administrators of MCC to develop the institution into a Centre of Excellence.

He also donated a sum of Rs.50,000 to the institution.

Paul Appaswamy of the Madras School of Economics and Besant Raj, Chairman, MCC Association, felicitated Dr. Chelliah.

Notable contributions

Dr. Appaswamy highlighted the contributions of Dr. Chelliah to the country and its various universities, academic establishments and other organisations, including as Founder Director of the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy.

College Principal V.J. Philip also spoke. Dr. Chelliah was the third Padma awardee this year, along with E.C.G. Sudarshan (Padma Vibhushan) and Indra Nooyi (Padma Bhushan), who belonged to the MCC family, Dr. Philip said.

C. Selvaraj, Head, Department of Economics, welcomed the gathering.
