Five killed in car-lorry smash

All occupants of the car die

TIRUCHI: Four nuns and a car driver were killed in a road accident involving a car and a lorry on the Tiruchi-Chennai highway near Siruganur in the district in the small hours of Friday.

The victims were identified as Amali Santha (53), Rethinam (65), Pethalin (67), Alphonse Fathima (55) and Kaliappan (23), the driver of the car.

Police sources said that the nuns were travelling in the car from Puducherry to attend a condolence function here when the vehicle and the Chennai-bound lorry from Manapparai collided head on. All the occupants of the car were killed on the spot and the car was completely damaged.

The bodies were shifted to the K.A.P. Viswanatham Government Medical College Hospital here for post-mortem and later handed over to the relatives.

The lorry driver, Perumal (41), has been cited as the accused. The Siruganur police have registered a case.
