Dalit art fete begins today

MADURAI: The dawn-to-dusk Dalit art festival will be held at the United Christian Higher Secondary School Grounds, Arasaradi, on March 17.

Addressing a press meet here on Friday, K.S. Muthu, coordinator, said that though the festival was organised by Dalit Resource Centre initially to provide space for rural art form that had been neglected for centuries together, now it incorporated new ideas aimed at freeing the oppressed community.

The 14th edition of the festival would concentrate on the theme `Dalit and Economics,' Mr. Muthu said and added that the social message, strong and clear, would be powerfully conveyed through skits, songs and drama.

The festival would comprise more than 30 events involving 500 artistes. As many as 50 women would be on stage to perform `karagattam.'

The festival would begin at 6 p.m. and go on till 6 a.m., the next day. Seminars on Dalit issues would also be organised as part of the festival.

Children from Vidyal, a city-based non-governmental organisation, would stage three skits on child labour.

`Ayya Alagarsamy Vathiyar' Award, `Veeriyakari' Award and `Viduthalai' Award would be distributed to senior artistes who had involved themselves in the rehabilitation of neglected art forms.
