Karnataka through to last eight

Principal Correspondent

DHARAMSHALA: Sunil Joshi and B. Akhil fashioned a 32-run win for Karnataka as Bengal frittered away an early advantage to rash shots in the pre-quarterfinal match of the all-India inter-State one-day cricket tournament for the Premier Cup at the HPCA Stadium here on Saturday.

Joshi worked his way to four wickets from either ends while Akhil removed three key Bengal batsmen just when they seemed to be settling down. Bengal, chasing Karnataka's total of 216 for nine, was bundled out for 184 with two overs remaining.

Shaky start

With Ranadeb Bose firing from one end, Karnataka started on a shaky note losing three quick wickets with just 18 runs on the board. Opener Barrington Rowland was run out without opening his account before Bose sent Bharat Chipli and Raju Bhatkal back to the pavilion.

Two more wickets fell cheaply before V.S. Tilak Naidu (46, 63b, 6x4) and Yere Goud (66, 104b, 3x4) provided some resistance. The two added 77 runs for the sixth wicket.

With the score at 113, Naidu was trapped in front by Manoj Tiwari, but R. Vinay Kumar, maintained the momentum after her joined Goud in the middle.

The target was hardly intimidating, but in the middle overs, Bengal's scoring rate dropped. Karnataka grabbed the chance and tightened the screws as Bengal lost wickets at regular intervals.
