Rs. 2 crore allocated for Ingaleshwar village

Staff Correspondent

It is the birthplace of 12th century reformer Basaveshwara

BIJAPUR: Budget proposals announced by Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa have brought cheer to the public even as the Rs. 2-crore allocation to develop Ingaleshwar village, the birthplace of 12th century social reformer Basaveshwara has caused some resentment.

A decision to set up a Horticulture University in Bagalkot, and the allocation of Rs. 10 crore for the purpose has come as a pleasant surprise.

K.H. Mumbaraddi, secretary of Karnataka Grape Growers Association, said the university would go long way in boosting horticulture crops in the region. It would provide a fillip to research activities. However, horticulturists in the region would have been happier had the Government conceded to their demand to set up an export zone, Dr. Mumbaraddi told The Hindu .

According to Chikkodi MP, Ramesh Jigajinagi, the budget is "excellent" as it takes care of all sections of society. People of Ingaleshwar in Basavanabagewadi taluk are ecstatic as the Government has recognised the village as the birthplace of Basaveshwara and allocated Rs. 2 crore for its development. However, it has led to resentment in Basavanabagewadi town, where the Basaveshwara temple exists and its complex was developed under Koodalasangama Development Authority.

Members of Basava Janmsthana Horata Samiti led by Balanagouda Patil took out a procession

Basavanabagewadi town on Saturday, and burnt the effigy of Mr. Yediyurappa. According to them the fresh announcement by the Government contradicted its earlier announcement recognising Basavanabagewadi as the birthplace of Basaveshwara.
