BANGALORE: League leader Dempo Sports Club (Goa) continued to nose ahead with an authoritative 3-1 victory over local challenger Hindustan Aeronautics Sports Club (HASC) in the ninth round of the ONGC Cup National Football League tie at the Football Stadium here on Saturday. HASC looked like a beaten side even before the match started with four of its main players not in the starting line up and this did give a psychological edge for the Goan side. Barring Prashant Jaggi in the deep and Satish Kumar in the middle, there was little that HASC could do this day, even as Murali boomed in a long ranger in the 43rd minute to reduce the margin (1-2) before half time. Ranty Martin opened the account with a powerful header in the 11th minute following Clifford Miranda's flag kick and Clifford himself added to the tally when his curling cross from the far left corner dipped into the net with the HASC defence and custodian Gumpe Rime watching perplexed. Dempo sealed its victory in the very second minute of the second session. After a fine run down the left, Clifford centred the ball into the box wherein Ranty deftly played it back for his captain Roberto D'Silva to slam home. With this win, Dempo has 20 points from nine outings (six wins, two drawn) while HASC has six points from as many matches.
