MADURAI: S. Manjunath (34) from Andhra Pradesh was killed when an overhead water tank gave in at Keela Urapanur near Tirumangalam on Saturday. The police said the tank collapsed and fell down on him when he, along with V. Navin (24) also from Andhra Pradesh, was taking bath under it. While the deceased got trapped right under the tank and crushed to death on the spot, the other managed to escape with injuries. Both of them were working for a contractor involved in four-laning work.
Protection sought
Seven councillors of the Tirunagar town panchayat have sought police protection fearing threat to their lives from the local body chairperson, Indira Gandhi, and her associates. The councillors, led by the local body vice-chairman, R. Subramanian, presented petitions to the Collector, S.S. Jawahar, and the district police on Saturday. The chairperson, they alleged, was irked by certain "financial irregularities" raised by the councillors.
