Laments neglect of Nagammal's role in film on Periyar

SALEM: Union Minister of State for Textiles E.V.K.S. Elangovan said here on Saturday that his Ministry had chalked out an ambitious plan to provide a major thrust to the handloom industry in Tamil Nadu by establishing more clusters.

He told reporters that the Ministry had identified sites for establishing 20 clusters to provide financial, marketing and design development facilities to weavers. "Land acquisition process is going on at various sites."

Efforts would be taken to add more clusters in coming years.

Mr. Elangovan said the Ministry would extend assistance for establishing a textile park at Salem provided local industrialists submitted a detailed proposal. Five such parks - Palladam, Perundurai, Cuddalore, Komarapalayam and a fifth one, which is yet to be finalised - had been sanctioned.

Saying that the role of Nagammal, wife of EVR Periyar, had been neglected in the film being produced on the social reformer's life, Mr. Elangovan, a member of the Periyar family, said Nagammal was an important part in the life of the great social leader.

Dravidar Kazhagam president Veeramani should answer why her role was ignored in the film.

"The Government had provided financial assistance to the film and Mr. Veeramani also collected funds for making it. These financial details should be made public," he said.

Irregularities

When his reaction was sought to the statement of three PMK MLAs, who had alleged large-scale irregularities in the selection of beneficiaries for various schemes in Salem district, the Minister said in a democracy, there was nothing wrong in coalition partners voicing difference of opinion.
