3 workers killed

ERODE: Three workers travelling atop a tobacco-laden lorry were killed after they fell down from the vehicle near Dharapuram on Friday.

According to police the three fell off the lorry after they were hit by tree branches. While Sundararaj and Murugesan died on the spot, Maasanam died after admission to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. — Staff Reporter

Rally against Koodankulam project

TIRUNELVELI: Over 1,000 people took out a rally at Koodankulam on Saturday, protesting against the construction of nuclear reactors. They demanded that the Centre order a CBI enquiry into the use of `substandard' material in the construction of the reactors. They also urged the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board to conduct the proposed public hearing at Koodankulam instead of Tirunelveli. Staff Reporter

Rally taken out

CHENNAI: Workers in unorganised sector took out a rally in Chennai on Friday demanding comprehensive protection and livelihood rights. The procession started from Munroe Statue on Anna Salai and ended near the State Guest House, Chepauk. According to the Unorganised Workers Federation (UWF), though a big chunk of the workforce in the country was in the unorganised sector, the Union Government was not devoting adequate attention to the workers' social security. — Special Correspondent

Rs. 10 lakh grant for Urdu Academy

CHENNAI: The State Government has granted Rs. 10 lakh to the Tamil Nadu State Urdu Academy for 2006-07 for conducting various programmes and activities, according to the Academy's vice- chairman, Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, the Prince of Arcot.

The governing council of the Academy, which met under the chairmanship of the Higher Education Minister, K. Ponmudy, decided to utilise the grant to finance the institution's activities such as grants to writers and poets, cash prizes and scholarships to meritorious students and financial assistance to libraries, Mr. Abdul Ali said in a press release.

The Government has also agreed to a proposal for setting up a permanent office for the Academy, he added. — Special Correspondent

Supplemental convocation

Chennai: Application forms for the University of Madras' Supplemental Convocation, to be held on March 28, are available at the University Enquiry Counter at Chepauk, a press release says. Those who have qualified for the Ph.D degree and have not applied for the convocation so far and those who have passed out of the Institute of Distance Education can apply for the convocation. The last date for submission of completed forms is March 23. — Special Correspondent

One killed in tank collapse

MADURAI: S. Manjunath (34) from Andhra Pradesh was killed when an overhead water tank gave in at Keela Urapanur near Tirumangalam on Saturday.

Police said the tank collapsed and fell over him when he, along with V. Navin (24) also from Andhra Pradesh, was taking bath. — Staff Reporter
