HYDERABAD: It was a paradoxical situation in the elections to the Legislative Council on Saturday. While TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu, a staunch opponent of the revival of the Upper House, cast his vote from the graduates' constituency, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, a strong votary for the council, did not register his name as a voter. Dr. Reddy came in for criticism on this score from the BJP and the TDP with the latter questioning his commitment to the Legislative Council.
No change in stance
Speaking to reporters after casting his vote, Mr. Naidu said though there was no change in his stand that the TDP would abolish the Council if it came to power, he had cast his vote as it was part of the democratic process. "The Chief Minister's lack of interest in voting amounts to ridiculing the processes," he said. APCC president K. Keshava Rao, however, made light of these charges. He said Dr. Reddy probably could not enrol himself owing to his busy schedule. Sources close to the Chief Minister said he would anyway cast his vote in the elections from the MLAs' quota.
