NHAI urged to develop greenery along highways

ONGOLE: Magunta Sreenivasulu Reddy, Ongole MP, has asked National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials to develop greenery along the highways to compensate for the loss of trees suffered due to widening of the road into four lanes.

He flagged off three ambulances and two patrolling vehicles here on Saturday to mark the inauguration of operation and maintenance of Chennai-Kolkata NH-5 from Nellore to Chilakaluripet.

Objective

The NHAI awarded the contract to Messers SMS Infrastructure of Nagpur for a period of three years. The firm was required to clean and maintain the meridian, put up signboards, develop greenery. It would also undertake round-the-clock patrolling of the national highway to prevent accidents.

The ambulances were stationed at Kavali, Singarayakonda and Medarametla to provide first aid to accident victims and rush them to hospital.

Cranes were also provided to lift any vehicle stranded on the road.

Director of SMS Anil Sancheli said that the contract was awarded to enable smooth flow of traffic on the highway, help commuters and remove any bottlenecks.

The operations would be taken up on the 182-km stretch from Nellore to Chilakaluripet.

Commuters can contact the control room at Singarayakonda by calling telephone numbers 08598-236600 or 236700 for any assistance. Project Director, NHAI, Ravi Naik, General Manager of SMS S.D. Kihleage explained the nature of operations they would undertake to help the commuters.

Project coordinator Sahadev sought the help of Mr. Sreenivasulu Reddy in getting FM channel broadcast any traffic jams, accidents, etc. to the commuters and help regulate traffic.
