Manage maximum MCD tickets for their supporters

NEW DELHI: Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ram Babu Sharma and Members of Parliament Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler have emerged as the biggest gainers from the process of selection of candidates by the party for the upcoming Municipal Corporation of Delhi elections as most of the ticket aspirants supported by them managed to make the grade.

Candidates promoted by Union Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken, Delhi Education Minister Arvinder Singh and even MLAs such as Mahabal Mishra, S.C. Vats and Meera Bharadwaj have also been given tickets.

Satisfied with the process, Mr. Ram Babu Sharma said now the responsibility for ensuring a victory in the polls would be "ours".

He said the party had infused a lot of young blood into the poll scenario by giving over 50 per cent of the tickets to the youth. Among those who have got the party ticket are Delhi Youth Congress president Amit Malik and Delhi Mahila Congress president Abha Chaudhary.

Sensing the mood of the people against the sitting Councillors, the Congress has denied ticket to 60 sitting Councillors. The party had earlier declared that no one involved in corruption or criminal activities would be given a ticket. Mr. Sharma said: "we have given preference to grassroots workers and those who have worked in a dedicated manner for the party".

However, when it came to selecting kin of senior leaders, the party adopted a soft stance. While Beni Ram, personal assistant to former DPCC president Deep Chand Badhu, has been fielded from Sawan Park, Delhi Speaker Chaudhary Prem Singh's son Pramod Chaudhary has been given the ticket from Dakshinpuri Extension and former Delhi Minister Mohinder Singh Saathi's son Gurjeet Singh Saathi will contest on the party symbol from Vishnu Garden. Three relatives of Hastsal MLA Mukesh Sharma also managed to secure the party tickets.

Taking care of its own, the Congress has also given tickets to five of the DPCC office bearers. Besides, the party has also given tickets to nearly 10 of its block presidents.
