Appeal to IOA chief Kalmadi on reconsidering plan to construct Commonwealth Games Village on the river bank

NEW DELHI: After the city's vanishing greens it is now its dying river that has brought the citizens of Delhi and concerned environmentalists together under a unique "Yamuna Jiye Abhiyaan" campaign. Refusing to give up on the river just yet and giving it a fighting chance at revival, the group in its first collective action has written to Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi asking him to have a fresh look at the proposal to construct the Commonwealth Games-2010 Village on the Yamuna flood plains.

"Despite continuing protests from environmentalists and advice of the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests, the village continues to be planned on the Yamuna flood plains," said Manoj Kumar Misra, Convenor of "Yamuna Jiye Abhiyaan". Those supporting the "Yamuna Jiye Abhiyaan" include Pani Morcha, Ridge Bachao Andolan, PEACE Institute Charitable Trust and Matu People's Organisation. In its letter to Mr. Kalmadi, it has drawn his attention to the fact that with the construction of the village, the city would be deprived of its groundwater recharge area.
