dated March 19, 1957: Magsaysay's body found

The charred body of the Philippines President, Ramon Magsaysay, was recovered on March 18 from the burnt-out wreck of his plane on Cebu Island. The Minister of Defence, Mr. Eulogio Balao, said the President's body had been identified beyond doubt by his wrist-watch, his teeth and remnants of his suit. Other mangled and badly-charred bodies have been recovered from the wreckage of the DC-3 plane which crashed early on March 17 with 25 people on board. Meanwhile, the Vice-President, Mr. Carlos Garcia, was sworn in as the President. Before being sworn in, he told newsmen he would implement every item of President Magsaysay's policy as Magsaysay himself would have done. Politician, poet, former law student and teacher, Mr. Garcia's philosophy is based on the principle that "life is what you make it."
