No to missile shield

PRAGUE: More than 200 Czechs demonstrated on Saturday in the capital Prague and elsewhere to protest against U.S. plans to construct part of its anti-missile defence system on Czech soil. Protesters marched to the U.S. embassy in the capital and also held rallies in downtown Prague. On the same day, inhabitants of Trakovec, a small Czech village, voted overwhelmingly against U.S. plans for a radar installation near the village of 72 residents. The siting of the radar facility, part of the U.S. anti-missile defence system, is just 2 km from the village. Neighbouring villages also plan to hold their own referendums over the next weeks, local media said. The United States is seeking to deploy a missile defence radar in the Czech Republic and interceptor missiles in Poland as part of its shield against ballistic missiles. — Xinhua
