One more arrested in gangland murder case

Staff Reporter

Arrest made on the basis of a tip-off

Thiruvananthapuram: The city police have arrested Amir, 29, one of the accused in the February 20 gangland murder of `Aprani' Krishnakumar near Chakka on the National Highway bypass.

Amir, of Attinkuzhi, near Attipara, was taken into custody from a lodge at Kovalam on Saturday night.

Circle Inspector (Pettah) R. Mahesh Kumar said the accused went into hiding after the brutal murder and had been staying in various places in different districts before coming to the beach resort. The arrest was made on a tip-off.

He said Amir and Krishnakumar had been members of the same gang and went to the Gulf.

The two who were close friends fell apart over some financial deal.

Krishnakumar returned from the Gulf and took over as leader of one gang and Amir became the key person of the rival gang.

Mr. Mahesh Kumar said Amir and his gang had tried to attack Salim, who was close to Krishnakumar.

In retaliation, Krishnakumar's gang barged into the house of Amir and attacked his father.

Around this time, several persons inimical to Krishnakumar conspired against him and carried out the murder.

With the arrest of Amir, four persons have been arrested in connection with the brutal murder. Venukuttan, 23, was arrested on February 25 on the charge of conspiracy and for allegedly arranging the vehicle used by the assailants.

Probe intensified

Later, `Peeli' Shibu and Arun, both listed as "gang leaders and habitual offenders" on police records, surrendered before the First Class Magistrate Court here, taking the police by surprise.

The police have intensified the investigations for the other accused in the case, Mr. Mahesh Kumar said.
