Pakistan clarifies on CJ's `status'

This is seen as an attempt by Government to defuse situation

Islamabad: Following protests over the suspension of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary, Pakistan on Sunday said the judge was sent on compulsory leave following complaints.

"The Honourable Chief Justice was sent on leave under Sec. 2 of the Judges Compulsory Leave Order 1970," the Law Minister Wasi Zaffar said in a statement.

Earlier he had said that Mr. Chaudhary had become "non functional" following the reference sent by President Pervez Musharraf to the Judicial Council to probe charges of abuse of authority.
