Thiruvananthapuram
Students who have signed up for the vacation classes at the Science and Technology Museum, Thiruvananthapuram, can look forward to a science-filled summer and hours of hands-on exposure to the nuts and bolts of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. For the junior crowd (Classes V to VII), the summer school will be all about basics of electrical and electronics, telescope making, clay modelling, photography and toying around with electrical and electronics circuitry. For those from Classes VIII to X there will be classes on computer and automobile engineering, maintenance of domestic appliances, classes on non-conventional energy and science lessons beamed down via the Edusat. "The emphasis will be on giving maximum practical training to the students. We have closed admissions as there is a too heavy a rush and as we do not want to compromise on the quality of the training we give," Museum director S.L.P. Mahmood said. Students who visit the museum can also drop by the Edusat interactive facility on the campus and listen to lectures on various topics on science and technology. The interactive classes are centred at Vigyan Prasar studios in Delhi and beamed via Edusat to various centres across the country. The Space Applications Centre (SAC) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) located in Ahmedabad has provided the museum with a multimedia computer, a set of speakers, a push-to-talk microphone and a web camera to enhance the quality of interaction for the Edusat-based lessons. The classes on Tuesdays will be held from 10.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. "Our library will also be open for students to refer books on various topics in science and technology. After the summer school is over, we will start classes at our Talent Development Centre. These classes on various aspects of science and technology will be based on the projects relating to the curriculum in schools and will be held every Sunday," Mr. Mahmood added.
