Encourage organic farming, Governments told

Staff Reporter

Subsidies should be provided

ERODE: "Continuous use of chemical fertilisers will cause various diseases to the crops and farmers will incur heavy productivity loss. So the Union and State Governments should insist the farmers to go for organic farming and subsidies should be given to encourage them," said Organic farming scientist Namalwar on Sunday while delivering valedictory address at a seminar on organic farming conducted by the Junior Chamber of India and `Daily Thanthi' in Erode.

He stressed the importance of close relationship between consumers and farmers. The farmers should produce quality products, he said. "In India, especially in Tamil Nadu, lot of employment opportunities are available in agricuture sector."

He also felt sorry that most of rural youth have migrated to urban areas, leaving their lands barren.

Seminars

Namalwar asked to conduct such seminars and exhibitions all over Tamil Nadu to popularise organic farming. Green Movement president V. Jeevanandhem and others spoke. There were more than 70 stalls popularising the message about the importance of organic farming.
