Canada makes England work for win

GROS ISLET: England survived another mini collapse to beat a plucky Canada by 51 runs on Sunday, in a World Cup match overshadowed by Andrew Flintoff's suspension for a drunken night out.

England posted 279 for six after being sent in to bat by Canada at the Beausejour Cricket Ground.

After an early wobble, Canada rallied for a credible total of 228 for seven, highlighted by Ashif Mulla's half-century, as England struggled to bowl it out.

Highest total

It was Canada's highest total in 11 World Cup matches.

Canada was 35 for three by the 11th over and 64 for four in the 18th before Mulla took control of the innings.

He hit seven fours and a six and his fifth-wicket stand with Abdool Samad contributed 96 runs.

They fell within the space of four balls — Mulla stumped and Samad trapped lbw by Monty Panesar.

England dropped Flintoff for disciplinary reasons after newspaper reports emerged of his night out drinking following England's six-wicket loss to New Zealand on Friday.

According to British media, Flintoff had to be rescued from the ocean at 4 a.m. on Saturday by hotel staff after capsizing a pedalo. Flintoff was also stripped of the vice-captaincy.

However, a contrite Flintoff on Monday apologised for the drunken antics and vowed it would never happen again. England must beat Kenya in its last Group C match to ensure it qualifies for the second round.
