TIRUNELVELI: The police have arrested an autorickshaw driver for allegedly murdering N. Meena Rani (29) of Tirunelveli town on March 12. Speaking to presspersons here on Monday, the Commissioner of Police , Ashok Kumar Das, said U. Ramakrishnan (25) of Meenakshipuram in Tirunelveli Junction, pretending as a cable television technician, trespassed into Meena Rani's house when her husband, S. Natarajan, had gone for work. After stabbing Ms. Meena Rani to death, he stole her jewels and a mobile phone. "A special team formed to nab the culprit, picked up Ramakrishnan on the stretch connecting KTC Nagar and Tiruchendur Main Road on Monday on suspicion. Enquiries with him categorically revealed that he had committed the crime," Mr. Ashok Kumar Das said. During interrogation, Ramakrishnan reportedly told the police that he was struggling to repay the loan he had availed to buy two autorickshaws and hence he murdered the woman and stole her gold chain, weighing 8 sovereigns, a stud and a mobile phone, all worth Rs.34,000. Apart from recovering the stolen valuables from the accused, the special team, led by the Tirunelveli Town Police Inspector (Law and Order), A.V.S. Mohamed Mohideen, also seized a knife used for murder.
