Ankita, Sanaa fall by the wayside

MUMBAI: India's challenge in the $25,000 Mumbai University ITF Women's tennis tournament suffered a setback here with first round exits for Ankita and Sanaa Bhambri.

American qualifier Amber Liu, ranked 544 on the WTA list, overcame a spirited challenge from Sanaa, ranked 530, to win 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-0.

India's Rushmi Chakravarthi tuned up for matches ahead with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Misa Kinoshita (Japan).

Ankita Bhambri conceded her first round tie against Sonal Phadke due to a sprained ankle when leading 3-2 in the first set against the local qualifier.

South Korea's Jeong Cho extended her qualifiers form into the main draw, sending out lucky loser Krushmi Chheda in straight sets.

The two had met in the final qualifying round on Sunday, the former winning the first time.

Italy's Martina Caciotti, another qualifier to make the second round, got past compatriot Nicole Clerico in three sets.
