HYDERABAD: A kilo of fresh tomato or brinjal at Rs. 3 and green chilli at Rs. 5 despite the skyrocketing prices of other vegetables, including lady's fingers and ribbed gourd? The Agricultural Market Committee at Bowenpally on Monday recorded the lowest price of Rs. 100 per quintal of ordinary quality of tomato and brinjal with Rs. 300 per quintal quoted for a superior quality. A sale of 360 quintals of tomato, 81quintals of brinjal and 218 quintals of green chilli was registered on a single day. Farmers from city surroundings, especially from Ranga Reddy district, were forced to quote tomato and brinjal at low prices as surplus yields have led to low demand. However, Selection Grade Secretary (Marketing) G. Ram Krishna Prasad says this trend of low prices of tomato and brinjal will continue for a fortnight and thereafter, the rise in the prices of all vegetables is inevitable in April. "It is lack of guidance for farmers in crop planning. In fact, the Horticulture Department has no crop planning for the State and as a result every farmer tends to grow the same hoping for more profits. However more supply means less demand," says Mr. Prasad.
