dated March 21, 1957: Congress voted to power

The Congress Party was voted back to power at the Centre on March 20. The ruling party secured 15 seats more than needed for an absolute majority in the 500-member Lok Sabha. Dr. Punjabrao Deshmukh, Union Minister for Agriculture, was returned from the Amaravathi constituency in Bombay State by a majority of over one lakh votes. Another notable victory was that of Sardar Hukum Singh, Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha. The Opposition registered its first victory in the elections to the Lok Sabha from Punjab when Mr. Pratap Singh (Communist) was declared elected from the Jhajjar Parliamentary constituency in Rohtak district. He defeated the sitting Congress member, Mr. G.L. Bansal, by a margin of 21,329 votes in a straight fight. With the announcement of results for all the 105 Assembly seats in the general elections from the Telengana region of Andhra Pradesh, the Congress Party has captured 68 seats. Together with the 147 seats held by the Congress in the former Andhra Assembly, the ruling party has gained 215 seats in the State Assembly. The overall party position in the 301-member Assembly is: Congress 215, PDF 22, Andhra Nationalist Party 19, Socialists 16, Communists 13, Independents 11, PSP 2, Praja Party and SCF one each and vacant one.
