Responsible for causing death of small fish, says Minister

PANAJI: The Goa Government will soon approach the States of Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to seek their cooperation on submission of a joint memorandum to the Centre demanding a ban on international trawlers allegedly responsible for causing the death of small fish, resulting in the decline in fish catch off the coasts.

Goa Minister for Fisheries Jaoquim Alemao, who is also a local trawler owner, told The Hindu on Monday that Goa has taken the lead in preparing a memorandum to be submitted to the Union Minister for Fisheries.

The Minister outlined the need to know the reasons for the decline in fish catch in Goa and across the country, which according to him, has been reported to be 40 per cent in the last three years.

On Sunday, speaking at a function of the South Goa Boat Owners' Association, he attributed the cause to the alleged involvement of international trawlers.
