Speaker K. Radhakrishnan hardly fits in the slot of politicians who are prolific in their articulation of their views and opinions on diverse topics at public functions. He said as much at a public function here recently and the audience appreciated his candour. Mr. Radhakrishnan, in his inaugural speech at the function organised here by the Information and Public Relations Department on the Right to Information Act, underscored the scope of the Act in bringing transparency in governance. He gave examples of progressive enactments that had failed to serve the purposes they were meant to do. Before concluding his brief speech touching on the legacy of official secrecy left by the British in the country, he said as a Speaker he was supposed to speak less. "My job as a Speaker is not to speak more but to control those who speak more," he said in a lighter vein much to the amusement of the audience.
