Rare opportunity for doctors

A three-day workshop on advanced uro-laparoscopic procedures and retrograde intra-renal surgery, which concluded here on Sunday, was a rare opportunity for hundreds of doctors, including those from Pakistan, Sri Lanka and West Asia, attending the programme to watch live surgeries during the sessions. One of the live operations out of the over 20 surgeries conducted as part of the workshop was a kidney transplant from a middle-aged mother to her son. All the theatre procedures were beamed live from Baby Memorial Hospital in the city to the conference venue at Kadavu Resort on the banks of Chaliyar river.

P. Hari Govind, organising committee member, said that the live workshop on renal surgeries was being conducted for the first time in the State. Delegates also had the opportunity to interact with international faculty at the time of the operations. Dr. Richarad Gaston, a pioneer in the field of minimally invasive surgery in Europe, Dr. Mihir M. Desai, an endo and laparoscopic surgeon from Cleveland, U.S., Dr. Inderbir Gill, urologic and laparoscopic surgeon from Cleveland, and Dr. Michael Wong Yuet Chen, another expert from Singapore, were the leading faculty members, he said.
