HYDERABAD: Over 16,000 titles written by scores of poets and writers in Urdu, Persian and Arabic, dating back to early 1700's to the recent 19th century from the personal collection of Salar Jung are now available online for researchers, scholars and Urdu literature enthusiasts. Salar Jung Museum's (SJM) Urdu library has become the first `Urdu' library in the twin cities and perhaps in the State to offer online access to its vast reserves of rare and priceless literature. The collections can be accessed on: http://dli.iiit.ac.in. Other Urdu libraries in twin cities like Dairutul Marifi and Oriental Library near Osmania University and Adabiyat-e-Urdu are still in the process of digitising their collection. It would be one more year, before the book collection of these libraries goes online. "We could not announce this officially due to several reasons but since the past three months, most of Urdu, Persian and Arabic works have been made online. Earliest books, which are nearly 300 years old, have been made available online," said Chief Conservator of SJM Ahmed Ali.
Significance
The collection of books in the Urdu library holds significance because these books are part of the personal book collection of Salar Jung and several of them were presented personally to him by various heads of the State during his visits to various provinces.
