Plea to recognise Scheduled Tribes in Puducherry

Special Correspondent

Puducherry: Pattali Makkal Katchi Parliamentary Party leader M. Ramadoss has made a plea to the Centre once more to recognise the Scheduled Tribes (STs) residing in the Union Territory of Puducherry.

Mr. Ramadoss said in a release on Tuesday that want of recognition had been depriving the STs of reservation benefits as well as welfare schemes of the Central and State Governments.

But whenever the Centre took census in the Union Territory, the STs were either excluded from enumeration or from inclusion in the general demography of the Union Territory.

The STs' associations had been making a strong case for the recognition for a long time.

The Assembly had also adopted resolutions and forwarded them to the Centre. All evidences and documents presented in support of the existence and permanent residence of the STs had not been taken for consideration since the Puducherry became free in 1954.
