Torrential rain in the last four days in the Kashmir Valley has made the government declare a flood alert and close schools for at least four days.
Reports said that a child was killed and another wounded when they were caught in a strong current in the Lidder nallah in Pahalgam. Though locals managed to pull one of them out of the water, Irfan Ahmad was killed while the other, Bilal Ahmad, was injured. The three kids were reportedly on their way to school.
The flood control department in Srinagar said the water level in the Jhelum river near Sangam rose to 19.50 feet, one and a half feet below the danger mark that can cause floods in different areas of the valley.
With the Meteorological Department here predicting rain and snowfall at most places across the State, besides heavy rainfall at some places during the next 24 to 48 hours, the situation can worsen over the next two days.
The Srinagar-Jammu national highway was closed after some stranded vehicles carrying passengers and goods were allowed to pass.
