Letters to the Editor
The one common thing about the "Tragedy and disappointments" (editorial, March 20) in the subcontinent is that cricket is doing more than what a game should do and taking a toll on the players and professionals. The expectations often choke the teams, making the business more stressful.
Balachandran RithuParnan,
* * * Bob Woolmer's unfortunate demise is a glaring example of the unnecessary pressure the electronic media exert on players and officials of the World Cup teams. Woolmer's death should prompt the authorities concerned to come out with strict laws to curb money spinning by the media at the cost of the lives and properties of players and officials.
S.W.M. Rizvi,
* * * A brilliant and aesthetically pleasing sport has fallen prey to crass commercialism. When play was called in Melbourne in March 1877 (when the first Test match was played), scarcely would Charles Bannerman or any of his Australian teammates have imagined that a defeat in cricket would lead to tragedies 130 years later.
N. Parthasarathy,
