Night landing facility at Vizag airport by April

HYDERABAD: Night landing facility for aircraft at the Visakhapatnam airport will become operational by next month.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is deputing its calibration unit to Vizag on March 23 to check the feasibility and it is expected to submit its report by this month-end. While Paramount Airlines, which is operating one flight daily in the morning now, has already sought permission to operate flights in the night to the port city, at least five other airlines companies have also evinced interest in availing the facility, it is learnt.

This facility is part of the expansion plan of the Visakhapatnam Airport, which is perennially dogged by the problem of cancellation and delay of flights due to bad weather and fog. The AAI and the State Government have entered into an agreement to wrap up the expansion plan of the airport by 2007.

The project has been jointly taken up by the Ministry of Defence, the AAI and the Andhra Pradesh Government at a cost of Rs.191.52 crore. The expansion of the runway will also facilitate landing of wide-bodied aircraft such as Boeing 767. The new terminal building will have the capacity of handling 700 persons an hour. A spacious concourse, check-in counters, frisking booths, duty-free shopping, elevators, escalators, restaurants and bars and child care rooms and boarding bridges will be the new features that are bound to delight the passengers soon.
