Employment scheme aimed at eco-restoration

Staff Reporter

PALAKKAD: A district-level advisory committee for the implementation of the Rural Employment Assurance Scheme has been formed under the chairmanship of district panchayat president Subaida Ishaq. Joint programme co-ordinator of the Central scheme C.B. Mohandas is the convener.

The works taken up under the scheme are aimed at helping the restoration of ecology that was destroyed in the form of deforestation, reclaiming of ponds, paddy fields, destruction of hills, etc., according to a release.

Palakkad district, which is gifted with three major rivers, thick forests, a large number of ponds and open wells, faces acute scarcity of water during the summer months.

A number of projects for cleaning of canals, ponds and other water sources are being implemented. Removal of silt from dams and check- dams has also been included in the scheme.
