NEW DELHI: Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Tuesday invited energy service, equipment and appliance manufacturing companies from the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) region and around the globe to exploit the huge commercial opportunities thrown up by the ambitious expansion of India's power sector. Inaugurating the two-day conference on `Emerging investment opportunities in the South Asian power sector,' organised jointly by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the South Asia Regional Initiative for Energy, the United States Agency for International Development and the SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Shinde said: "We need more than just one manufacturer for the manufacture of equipment such as turbines and boilers, especially for the units of the size of ultra mega power projects. We have, therefore, established a manufacturing arm of NTPC that will address the issue.'' Mr. Shinde said the Government was laying special emphasis on energy efficient projects that could lead to a saving of 73 per cent in energy consumption.
