Midday meals during vacation

Bangalore: The Department of Public Instruction has directed zilla panchayats to make arrangements to provide midday meals to children in the 128 drought-hit taluks during the summer vacation as well.

According to a release, Rs. 40 crore has been put aside for the project. Principals of schools or teachers have been instructed to oversee the process during the vacation between April 11 and May 28. — Special Correspondent

Ananthamurthy's appeal on stray dogs

BANGALORE: Jnanpith Award-winner U.R. Ananthamurthy has written to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy urging that a humane approach be adopted to deal with stray dogs. Dr. Ananthmurthy, who released a copy of the letter to the media, said people had become "beasts" while handling the issue. Dogs had been our friends since time immemorial and a detailed discussion was imperative for which the Chief Minister needed to intervene, he added.

`File returns before March 27'

BANGALORE: The Income Tax Department has asked all income-tax payers to remit personal income tax, corporate tax and TDS before March 27. Remittances can be made to avoid last-minute rush and inconvenience at bank counters, a press release said. — Staff Reporter

Support extended to Pak lawyers

BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Bar Council has expressed its solidarity with members of the legal fraternity in Pakistan who were assaulted by the police within the premises of the Lahore High Court.

The council passed a resolution in Bangalore not only condemning the attack by the police on the legal fraternity but also criticising the "ouster" of the Chief Justice of Pakistan, which it termed illegal and arbitrary.

It also expressed its support to advocates in Pakistan who are fighting for their rights and taking on the establishment.

Raghavendra Khasnis mourned

Bangalore: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has mourned the death of Kannada novelist Raghavendra Khasnis. Mr. Khasnis authored only a few books but they were of a high order. He was one of the special writers of Kannada literature, and his death was a great loss to Kannadigas, the Chief Minister said. — Staff Reporter

Awareness programmes

Madikeri: The Department of Information and Karnataka State Temperance Board have been jointly organising awareness programmes in the rural areas of Virajpet taluk in Kodagu for the last few days on the adverse effects of untouchability and alcoholism, an official release said here on Tuesday. Seminar

MYSORE: The JSS Mahavidyapeeth will conduct a two-day seminar on Veerashaiva Maths from March 21 at Hosmatha. There will be four sessions and two interaction programmes. Various subjects including, "Math-religion, society: an over view", "Religious rituals and present day society", "Seers and spirituality" and "Seers and their intellectual phases", "Maths: yesterday, today and tomorrow", "Veerashaiva Maths and maths of other religions" and "Problems being faced by maths and solutions" will be discussed. Cattle mela

MYSORE: The Ramachandrapura Math will organise a "World Cattle Convention" at Hosnagar from April 21 to 29. Experts, veterinarians, farmers, agriculturists and seers will participate in the convention, according to a release from the Mysore Seema Parishat. A committee comprising Raghaveshwara Bharathi Swamiji of Ramachandrapura Math, Sri Datta Sharananandji Maharaj, D. Veerendra Heggade and K.N. Govindacharya has been formed for the convention. "Akshata Abhiyana" ritual to invite people to the convention has already commenced in various parts of the country, the release added. — Staff Correspondent

Procession

Sirsi: Thousands of people witnessed Yugadi Shobhayatre held at Sirsi in connection with the Ugadi festival on Monday. Tableaux, Lambani folk dance, Kolata and Dollu Kunita attracted the spectators. Sonda Swarnawalli Gangadarendra Saraswati Swami participated in the procession. Shivalinga Swami of Bannadmath Sirsi said the education system should include tradition and culture.

Stir continues

BIJAPUR: The indefinite fast launched by slum dwellers under the banner of Bijapur Slum-Abhivriddhi Samiti here entered the second day on Tuesday even as two agitators were hospitalised.

They have been protesting for rehabilitation of 664 families evacuated in an encroachment drive carried out last year and according official slum status to localities such as Khazanagar, Ganesh Nagar, Kanaki Bazaar, Basaribhavi and Bashanagar. — Staff Correspondent

Theft in houses

RAICHUR: Houses in Gomarsi, E.J. Udbal and Madsirwar villages were burgled when the residents were asleep outside their houses in Sindhanur taluk on Monday night. Gold ornaments, valuables and cash were stolen. The total loss was put at Rs. 27,000. The police said three unknown persons entered the house of Moulasab in Gomarsi village and took away gold ornaments and cash. Similarly persons entered the house of Parvathamma in E.J. Udbal village. They took away valuables worth Rs. 15,000. In another case, persons entered the house of Shekarappa and took away valuables worth Rs. 4,000. — Staff Correspondent

Honorarium

GULBARGA: The Karnataka State Anganwadi Employees Association here on Tuesday criticised the State Government for not increasing the honorarium paid to anganwadi workers and helpers in the State Budget . The anganwadi workers took out a procession in the State and staged a demonstration in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner in the city. They accused Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and the Women and Child Welfare Minister H.K. Kumaraswamy of going back on their assurances.
