Identification of Defence pensioners

CHENNAI: Defence pensioners due for identification in April, May, and June are advised to report to the Ministry of Defence at Fort St. George from 1st to 18th of the particular month on any working day between 10 a.m and 4 p.m. (except Saturdays and Sundays).

According to a Defence Ministry release, documents to be produced include pension book, bank passbook, discharge certificate and pensioner identity card. Pensioners unable to report due to illness are advised to send life certificate indicating that they are alive, obtained from the Registered Doctor/Bank Manager/Gazetted Officer. It should be duly signed and stamp affixed.

If the pensioners are not identified on the due date or life certificate not submitted, their pension will be suspended without notice, the release added. — Special Correspondent

Anna University recruitment drive

CHENNAI: Anna University is organising an off-campus recruitment drive for students who passed out of self-financing engineering colleges affiliated to it in 2006 under the Tamil Nadu State level Placement Programme.

Caritor India will recruit students on March 22 at V.S.B. Engineering College, Karudayampalayam, Karur. The eligibility criteria is B.E/B.Tech (all branches), MCA and M.Sc (Computer Science/Electronics/IT), five-year course. A written test will be conducted on March 22 followed by an interview on March 23.

According to an Anna University press release, the students must have secured 60 per cent and above in their 10th standard, 12th standard and qualifying degree examinations.

Anna University Vice-Chancellor D. Viswanathan said candidates should bring two passport size photographs, photo copy of the marksheets of 10th standard, 12th standard and qualifying degree examinations. The candidates should report at 8 a.m. on March 22. — Special Correspondent

Housing Board teams to hear grievances

CHENNAI: Special teams constituted by the Tamil Nadu Housing Board will visit different parts of the State on March 27 to find out problems in issuance of sale deeds to those allotted plots or flats.

The allottees can bring to the notice of the teams their grievances, according to an official release issued on Tuesday. Between May and February, about 18,700 sale deeds were issued, the release added. — Special Correspondent

Arrack seized

Krishnagiri: Prohibition Enforcement Wing personnel seized 1,500 litres of arrack, worth Rs. 50,000, which was being smuggled in a car, near here on Tuesday. The police team was conducting vehicle checks at the NHAI toll plaza. — Staff Reporter

Special fare from Indian to Bangkok

CHENNAI: Indian (formerly Indian Airlines) has announced a special return fare of Rs. 5,800 plus taxes per person for a return trip to Bangkok from eight southern stations, says a release. A minimum of two passengers have to travel. The new fare would be available for tickets purchased between March 15 and April 15 and the travel should be completed on or before May 31 this year, the release said. Two killed in accident

ERODE: A government hospital nurse and a man died in separate accidents on Monday.

According to the police, Dhanalakshmi (52), nursing superintendent in Government Headquarters Hospital, Erode, was going home on her moped when she was knocked down by a State Transport Corporation bus near Teacher's Colony junction. Dhanalakshmi died on the spot. Erode South Police are investigating the case.

In another accident, Madeswaran, a native of Vadakattupalayam near Kavindapady, died when a van collided with his motorcycle near Suriampalayam on Monday killing him on the spot.

PDS rice seized

SALEM: Food cell personnel seized 700 bags of rice meant for supply under the Public Distribution System and arrested a person on charges of hoarding it at Mallur on Monday.

Official sources said following information, a team of personnel raided a house belonging to Gokulakannan of Veerasamy Puthur and found the rice bags each weighing 50 kg hoarded in it. They seized the rice and arrested one Mohan.

Arrested for damaging bus

SALEM: Police arrested two youth for assaulting the driver and conductor of a private bus and damaging the windowpanes here on Tuesday.

Police said Salim (24), a resident of Fort and his friend Sahul (22) tried to overtake the bus proceeding to Old Bus Stand. Later, they blocked the bus and assaulted its driver and conductor. Then they also damaged the windowpanes of the vehicle.

"Restore Tuticorin to Erode bus service"

Tuticorin: The All India Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged the State Government to restore bus service from Tuticorin to Erode immediately. J.P. Joe Villavarayar, president of the chamber, pointed out in a memorandum submitted to the Minister for Transport, K.N. Nehru, that overnight bus connectivity between the two industrial towns would be of immense help to traders and students.— Staff Reporter

18,252 students to write examinations

NAGAPATTINAM: A total of 18,252 students (8,559 boys and 9,693 girls) from 139 schools would appear for the SSLC public examination in Nagapattinam district that begins on March 22, according to Education department officials.

The examination would be held in 55 centres in the district comprising Nagapattinam and Mayiladuturai educational districts.

Matriculation exam

A total of 1,290 students (678 boys and 612 girls) are appearing for the Matriculation examination in 30 centres and the examination commences on Wednesday. — Special Correspondent

Pending passport applications cleared

TIRUCHI: The Passport Office, Tiruchi, cleared pending applications received till June 2006 to mark the World Consumer Day.

In a press release, the Passport Officer, K. S. Daulat Thameem, said that passports had been despatched to all the applicants who had submitted their applications till January 31, 2007. Those who had not received passport nor any communication for their applications submitted on or before December 31, 2006 may contact the Passport Office, Tiruchi, in person or dial 0431-2707203, 2707404, 2707941, 2707942, 27082225, 2707011 or through e-mail rpotry@sify.com or rpo.trichy@mea.gov.in or fax their petitions 0431-2707515.

BSNL opens online counter

TIRUCHI: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited has opened an online counter at Kottaipattinam in Pudukottai district for payment of landline telephone bills.

It will be open a day prior to the pay-by date and on the pay-by date, according to a release.

Similar online counters will be opened at the office of the SDOT at Thirumayam and at Ammapattinam Telephone Exchanges soon, the release added. — Special Correspondent

Elected

TIRUCHI: K. Premanathan and A. Senthil Annamalai have been elected Chairman and Vice-Chairman respectively of the Tiruchi zone of the Confederation of Indian Industry. Mr. Premanathan is the Managing Director of Anand Engineering and Mr. Senthil Annamalai is the Vice-Chairman of Vishnuraam Textiles.

The new office-bearers took charge during the annual day of the CII, Tiruchi, held here recently. — Special Correspondent

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 79.51 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Tuesday.

The inflow was 590 cusecs and the discharge from the dam was 1,500 cusecs. — Special Correspondent
